Western Digital My Book
External Hard Drive
The Western Digital My Book External World Edition
is a network-attached storage (NAS) drive. You can back up your data to
this wireless network external hard drive and access your files over
the Internet.
This wireless hard drive plugs into your router
with an ethernet port. Once plugged in, the Western Digital My Book
External Mac icon will pop up on your computer screen. You can drag
files onto the external drive. Or, use the software that comes with the
drive to set up automatic and continuous backup. Every time you save
something it is backed up instantly and automatically.
BTW, for you gamers, this hard drive will also
play multimedia files on your HDTV through the XBox 360 or Playstation
3.
Wireless Network External Hard Drive
Internet access to the files is slow, but works in
emergencies. NAS drives tend to work ore slowly than regular external
hard drives as the data is sent over an Ethernet connections. Rather
than a faster eSATA, FireWire or USB 2.0. The LaCie d2 Quadra desktop
drive offers a faster connection, but is not network capable.
Best USB External Hard Drive?
This wireless hard
drive does have a USB port, but
it is only used for attaching an additional eternal hard drive. You
cannot retrieve files from it using this port.
1 or 2 TB External Hard Drive
The Western Digital My Book World Edition comes in
1TB and 2TB capacities. World Edition II includes two separate hard
drives within one enclosure, in 2TB and 4 TB versions.
Not the Fastest External Hard Drive
While not the quickest, this external computer
hard drive is simple to set
up and use. It can be
used as Apple Macintosh Hardware as there is a Western Digital My Book
Mac Edition. It is user friendly and can be set up for
automatic
updates, but it is not compatible with Apple's Time Machine.
