Many people are concerned with the availability of free Mac fonts. Especially those iof you are in the advertising profession. As a Mac computer user, you don't have to worry about the availability of fonts for your system. Fonts are available for purchase, but there are a number of free Macintosh fonts as well.

In Mac OS X, Lucida Grande is the primary font used for the creation of labels and other miscellaneous text. If you are switching from Windows to Mac, Lucida Grande is virtually identical in look and feel to the Lucida Sans font available on PC's. But, Mac offers much more variety in this category. As far as fonts are concerned, your system should come preloaded with a large number of typefaces of stunning quality.

Apple has stated that all Mac OS X versions come with $10,000 worth of preloaded fonts. These are primarily Roman, Chinese and Japanese fonts. The latest and more sophisticated fonts, ligatures and filtering, are also supported by your Mac.

Among the free Macintosh fonts preloaded with your Mac, Apple offers a number of legacy typefaces such as Chicago, Monaco, New York, Palatino, etc. These fonts are the most common and are used quite frequently.

Apple has invested a lot of effort, time and money towards fonts and in making the user experience richer with every major release of the Mac OS X. You may have noticed that Mac fonts have come a long way from the initial release of Mac OS X released in March 2001. This included variations of Lucida Grande along with a few other Japanese scripts. With a true effort to achieve excellence, Mac introduced “Zapfino” as a calligraphic typeface for the Mac users. This was included in the free  fonts that are bundled with your new Mac computer.

There are not many companies that put in this amount of effort for their customer base. But, if you are not satisfied with the free Mac fonts pre-loaded on your computer, you can download free fonts from the Internet, or purchase Mac fonts.

A couple of good places to start? This site has been around since 2002 offering a variety of free and paid fonts. Another one to check out is Fonts 4 Mac, with over 250 free fonts. Both of these sites offer a plethora of Mac fonts to choose from.
